The 2nd XI travelled to Bready for their second away match of the season. Upon hearing the score from Bready’s last league match when they posted a total of 300 +, the Brigade team did not have high hopes for a victory and seemed to be more concerned with damage limitation.
Brigade batted first and with what seems to be a recurring theme lost an opening batsman in the 2nd over with the score on 2. Andrew Baggley then joined Dean Curry and the young duo put on a partnership of 73 before Curry was bowled by James Long on 25. Trevor Dalzell who has been lacking in runs in recent weeks definitely preferred the Bready bowling attack. He and Baggley put on a further 59 runs until a change of bowler saw Baggley caught by David Murdock off Jack Glenn’s bowling. Baggley finished on 61 which included 6 fours and hopefully this instilled some confidence which has been missing in recents matches. One of the main problems for such a young side is that only one or two succeed in putting runs on the board whilst the rest don’t make it into double figures, consistency is a major problem. Brigade’s batsmen put on 155 runs and with the help of Mr Extra the total finished on 170 for 10 off 46 overs.
For Bready, Ian Young returned figures of 4 for 26 off 10 overs, which included 3 maidens in the first 3 overs and 3 wickets from the last 3 balls in his 10th over. Jack Glenn took 3 wickets, James Long took 2 and Andrew Fleming took 1.
In reply Bready were probably hoping for a repeat performance from David Murdock and Colin Spence who both scored centuries against Donemana 2nds last week. Nick Donnell claimed the first wicket of Kyle Hamilton in the 7th over and then more importantly the wicket of David Murdock who was on 32 in the 11th. Colin Spence then joined brother Robert and as we’ve seen before anything can happen when Colin has a bat in his hand. Fortunately this was his off day and although he scored 15 during the 5 overs he was at the crease he was caught by Dalzell off Dougie Huey’s bowling. Brigade had a glimmer of hope with Bready’s score on 143 for 9 off 35 overs. With 28 runs required it fell to Andy Harper and Ross Campbell to keep the Bready hopes alive. Wicketkeeper Campbell dashed Brigade’s hopes of a first league win, posting 23 runs that included 2 fours and a final 6 that landed somewhere in the car park.
All of Brigade’s bowlers claimed wickets with Nick Donnell taking 4 at the expense of 57 runs, Trevor Dalzell taking 2 for 17 and Chris Campbell, Dougie Huey and Ivan Nicholl taking one each.
From a personal point of view Bready definitely has a 5 star rating when it comes to score huts. With an en suite bathroom, kitchen facilities and a radiator what more could a girl ask for!
